Founder of the Waltershausen doll industry, Johann Daniel Kestner, began his business career trading with soldiers in Napoleon's army in 1805. After the war ended in 1815, he opened a factory making wooden buttons and papier maché blackboards. Within a few years, he was producing dolls with both wood and papier maché heads on jointed wooden bodies.
